Guide & Pedagogy: DIY & Carpentry Skills

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

Woodworking children's toys give little hands real jobs: turning a screw, tightening a nut onto a bolt, fitting two planks together. Our tool boxes, workbenches and construction kits are made of wood and sized for children aged 3 and up.

A kids tool box or a workbench?

A tool box travels: it goes wherever something needs fixing, from a wobbly doll's bed to the garden gate. The 2-in-1 sets double as a mini workbench, one of them in pastel shades, and the deluxe toolbox also comes in grey and yellow. A full workbench, like the deluxe compact model, stays in one place and gives a steady surface to work on. The 2-in-1 workbench also turns into a drawing desk once the screws are put away.

Children's tools to wear and to build with

The wooden tool belt keeps everything at the hip, which is often what turns a three-year-old into a very serious handyman. The 3-in-1 wooden multi-tool combines three tools in one handle. For a project with a finished result, the 60-piece dinosaur kit and the grey and yellow dumper truck are built piece by piece, then played with.

Getting started with woodshop toys at home

Start with two or three fasteners rather than the whole set: one bolt, one nut, one screwdriver. Show the turn slowly, then let your child find the direction alone; the clockwise habit comes with practice. A low table or a corner of the kitchen floor is enough for a first workshop. For a child not quite three, our hammering toys are a good warm-up: the same pleasure of hitting the mark, with nothing to unscrew.

Woodworking children's toys reward patience more than strength: a real task, done carefully from start to finish, is what practical life means in wooden Montessori toys. Add the next bolt only once the first one goes on without help.
