Guide & Pedagogy: DIY & Crafts

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

Each of our craft kits holds a whole project in one box, from a clay dragon to a kite that really flies. Simple Christmas makes start at ages 3+, while kites, papercraft, paper mâché and sewing kits suit confident hands from 6 to 8+.

Easy craft sets for kids from 3 years

The youngest makers need big pieces and a quick result. Natural air-drying modelling clay can be shaped, left overnight and painted the next day, with no oven needed. The six wooden baubles to paint, the felt Christmas tree to decorate and the pack of four snow globes give a small child something to hang or offer within one afternoon. Cover the table with an old sheet before you start and let them choose the colours themselves, the same free choice found across our wooden Montessori toys.

Craft kits for kids aged 6 to 8 and up

Older children enjoy following steps towards something they can keep. The dinosaur pencil pot ends up on their desk and the diamond kite goes to the park. From 7, the superhero kit becomes a costume and mask for dressing up, while the papercraft angler fish, the paper mâché chameleon and the minibeasts and butterfly kit mix making with a bit of nature study. At 8+, the peacock embroidery kit teaches real stitches, and the 3D unicorn trophy and the clay dragon ask for patience and precise fingers.

Children's craft sets with a theme to explore

Some kits open a door onto another subject: the outer space kit and the ancient Peru kit pair the making with a little culture, which works well for a half-term week or a school project. If a theme catches on, a library book about the planets or the Incas turns one afternoon of making into a small project of their own.

A finished make deserves a place on show: a shelf, a window sill or the Christmas tree. Children are often prouder of a slightly wonky dragon they built themselves than of anything bought ready-made.
