Guide & Pedagogy: Activity Cubes
Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method
An activity cube gathers several games on one solid wooden block: beads to slide along wires, gears to turn, shapes to post, little pictures to discover. Our cubes are designed for babies and toddlers from around 12 months, from compact first cubes to XL models for two.
An activity centre in a single cube
Unlike a play mat, a cube invites your child to sit up, kneel or stand to reach the top. That is why it works so well around the first birthday, when babies are keen to pull themselves up: the top keeps their hands busy while their legs practise standing. Each face holds a different game, so a child can work round the cube and come back to a favourite.
Which cube to pick: themes and faces
For a first baby activity cube, the pastel model and the wooden motor skills cube keep to a few simple games; a child who only wants the beads may be happier with one of our bead mazes. The spring and savannah hexagonal cubes have more faces to explore, while the Ocean Wonders, Safari Adventures and Garden Minibeasts cubes build every game around animals children love to name aloud.
The XL multi-activity cube and the deluxe farm XL cube are made for sharing, as two children can play on different faces at once. The rabbit cube and the farm cube also serve as a little stool once play is over.
Activity cube for infants: when to start
Most of our cubes suit children from 12 months, when a baby sits steadily and reaches with both hands. Before that, an infant cube toy with one or two simple games is plenty; the busier cubes then keep up with your child into the third year.
Among our Montessori education toys, the cube is the one that gathers the most small challenges in one object. Turn it a quarter now and then so a different face sits in front of your child: the same toy feels fresh without adding anything new.
