Guide & Pedagogy: Train Sets & Circuits

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

A wooden train set is often the first toy a child learns to build alone: lay the track, link the carriages, then push. This collection brings together magnetic railways, pull-along trains and shape-sorting wagons, from simple push-along models for toddlers to full layouts for 3 year olds.

A first toy train for little hands

Before the track comes the train itself. The polar ice floe push-along train and the stacking shape pull-along train run across the floor with no rails at all; on the shape train, each block lifts off to be sorted and stacked again. The cargo train with inset wagons and the large shape-sorting train add a puzzle to every journey: each block has its own place in the wagon.

Building a first train track

From around 2 or 3, children start to plan their own railway. The village railway set and the crane set come with wooden train track to join piece by piece, and the crane lifts its loads with a magnet. On the modular train set, the carriages hold together with magnets, so even a small child can couple and uncouple them alone. Start with a simple oval loop, then add one new section at a time, so your child sees exactly what each piece changes.

Roads, stations and busy boards around the railway

A railway is more fun with a town around it, and the trains mix happily with blocks, animals and other Montessori wooden toys. The soft felt road mat with modular traffic tracks, the fire station playset and the construction site ball track turn the layout into a small world. For busy fingers, the locomotive busy board hides latches and catches to open one after another, a good choice for a child who would rather open doors than lay track.
