Guide & Pedagogy: Rattle & Teething Ring

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

A good teether gives your baby something firm to grip and chew while the first teeth are pushing through. This shelf holds wooden teething rings, gentle rattles and dummy clips, in plain beech or soft colours, shaped as stars, hearts, bunny ears and little animals.

Teething rings for babies: which shape to pick?

A ring is the simplest teether there is, and often the first of the wooden Montessori toys a baby holds: a smooth circle of wood that fits a small fist. Some carry a carved animal, bunny ears or a star; others add sensory beads or a tiny bell. For the first weeks, a light, plain ring is the easiest to hold. Beads and moving parts become more interesting once your baby starts passing a toy from one hand to the other.

A baby rattle that is also safe to chew

Many pieces here do both jobs. A wooden baby rattle with bells, like the ladybird or the squirrel, answers every shake with a soft jingle, while its chunky body is still a good surface to gnaw. The flexible grasping rattle and the clutching balls bend and click as little fingers squeeze them, a nice next step once the grip gets stronger.

Before the first tooth: what suits a newborn?

In the early weeks, newborn teether toys are first something to look at and hold, long before the gums need them. Dummy clips keep a dummy attached to clothing, so it stays off the floor of the café or the pushchair. The Baltic amber teething ring also comes as a set with a matching dummy clip, an easy present for a new mum.

Wood needs very little care: wipe each ring with a damp cloth, let it air-dry rather than soaking it, and check it now and then for rough patches.
