Guide & Pedagogy: Baby Walkers & Push Carts

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

Every baby walker on this page is a push cart, not a seated walker: your child stands behind the handle and walks it forward on their own two feet. Each one is made of wood and suits little ones from 12 months who are pulling up on furniture.

When to bring out an infant push walker

The right moment is usually when your baby stands holding the sofa and starts shuffling along it. Stand the cart in front of them, place their hands on the handle and let them lean in. Start on a rug: the wheels roll more slowly there than on a smooth floor, which gives those first wobbly steps time to catch up.

Activity walkers or wagons to fill

Activity walkers, such as the Deluxe Ocean, the Deluxe Rainbow or the Flying Animals model, carry a panel of things to turn, slide and spin, so a child can also play with them sitting on the floor between two walks. Wagon models have a tray to load instead: the building blocks cart, the pastel push walker and its 34 blocks, or the handyman tool truck. Walking then becomes carrying, and toddlers love to fill, push and tip out again.

A push along walker that stays in play

The crocodile is the one for children who need a reason to keep going: its jaws snap as it rolls. Once walking is steady, any wooden baby walker turns into a trolley for dolls, books and teddies, and it often stays in use until age 2 or 3, a long life for wooden Montessori toys bought for first steps. Park it next to the toy shelf rather than in the middle of the room: tidying up then becomes one more trip.
