Guide & Pedagogy: Language Skills
Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method
Wooden alphabet letters give children something to hold before they can write: a shape to trace with a finger, turn over and name out loud. This shelf brings together letter boards, tracing tablets and word games from age 2 to 6+, so your child can move from first shapes to first words.
Alphabet toys for 2 and 3 year olds
The youngest start with inset boards: each letter lifts out by hand and only drops back into its own space, so a mix-up shows straight away. The safari board pairs the letters with animals, which gives you plenty to chat about together. From 3, the vowels and consonants board sets a, e, i, o and u apart from the rest, a difference that comes back as soon as your child reads a first word. The reusable silicone colouring mat brings an illustrated alphabet to the kitchen table.
Tracing boards: from finger to pencil
Before the pencil comes the groove. Our tracing boards come in uppercase print and lowercase cursive, each with a wooden stylus that follows the path of the letter. The sensory pre-writing tablet works on lines and curves rather than letters, a good warm-up for a child who still holds the stylus in a fist. Start each letter at the same point every time, usually the top, and the gesture soon becomes automatic.
Stamps, word cubes and magnetic letters from 4 to 6+
Once letters feel familiar, children want to put them together. With the letter stamps and ink pads (ages 4+), a child prints their own name on a drawing, and the picture matching set (5+) pairs each picture with its word. For early readers aged 6+, the word building grid with letter cubes and the magnetic letters and numbers box make spelling something to line up, check and rearrange on the table: wooden Montessori toys for the age when letters start to make words.
Which letter set to buy, and at what age?
Our wooden alphabet letters are sorted by stage, so you can choose by age rather than guess: an inset board at 2, a tracing board at 3, then stamps or word cubes once your child starts reading. If your child already knows most letters by sight, skip the inset board and start with the uppercase tracing board: the letters they trace hesitantly are the ones still worth practising.
