Guide & Pedagogy: Musical Toys

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

Each toy in this musical range asks your child for a real gesture: shaking a rainmaker, striking a xylophone bar, blowing into a bird whistle. The sound comes straight back, so they hear at once what their hands have just done.

Musical toys for kids, from first shakes to steady rhythm

The youngest start with the rainbow rainstick and the safari sound tube: tip them slowly and the beads trickle down like light rain, tip them fast and you get a downpour. From 1 year, the push-along lion xylophone walker and the 2-in-1 hammering bench with xylophone add a note to every step and every tap. For babies under a year, our first baby instruments are gentler and lighter.

From ages 3+, the marching drum with drumsticks, the wind-up music box and the whistles take over. The mallard duck call, the animal whistle and the clay water warbler, which trills like a songbird once a little water is poured in, fit easily in a coat pocket for a walk in the park.

Toys that mix sound and play

Some pieces are not instruments at all but still make music. Marbles dropped into the musical marble tree ring on each petal on the way down, while the three-sided musical tower and the sensory activity table combine sounds with sliding, turning and posting, a bridge to the puzzles and stacking games among our wooden Montessori toys. For listening games, the auditory memory sound cylinders (ages 4+) ask your child to find the pairs that sound the same.

Making music together at home

Play a short rhythm on the drum and let your child copy it, then swap roles. Start with three slow beats and add a quick one when it gets easy. Turn-taking like this keeps the noise purposeful and makes careful listening part of the game.
