Choosing a first car for a one-year-old
A good first car is short, heavy at the base and easy to grip with a whole fist. Our small play cars come in natural beech or pink, with rubber grips or thick rubber tyres that roll smoothly across a wooden floor without skidding. One even has a squeaking rubber horn, which tends to become the favourite part. The car shape sorters add a second game: posting the blocks through the right holes, then driving the load away. Lorries with moving parts for 2 year olds
From 2 years, children want vehicles that do something. The dumper truck tips its load of shape blocks, the cement mixer has a drum that really turns, and the safari animal truck takes its passengers on board through shaped holes. The construction playsets, such as the police station with its car or the ambulance and hospital, are put together with simple pieces before the play begins. Lay a strip of masking tape across the floor as a road, and your toddler will drive the trucks along it, load them at one end and tip them out at the other.
Small world playsets: toy cars for kids aged 3 and up
Older children build whole scenes. The fire station, the farmyard and the service station from the Small World City range can stand side by side as a little town, and the soft felt road tracks can be rearranged into a new route each time. The 3D helicopter kit and the grey and yellow dumper are for children who enjoy assembling their vehicle before driving it, a step up from the push-along Montessori education toys of the toddler years.
For a first birthday, one sturdy car is plenty: a toddler will drive it across every room in the house long before asking for a second.
