Guide & Pedagogy: Bead Threading & Lacing Sets
Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method
Threading beads and lacing sets give children aged 3 and up one quiet task: pick up a piece, find the hole, push the lace through and pull. The range covers wooden bead kits, lacing fruit, sewing cards and a shoe tying toy, with one embroidery kit for older children.
Bead kits and lacing fruit
The farm animals kit is the classic set of wooden beads to thread, with animal shapes that invite a story while the string fills up. The caterpillar game works on the same gesture but with a clear goal: build the body bead by bead. For a child who still finds small beads fiddly, the strawberry, the apple with its caterpillar and the cheese with its mouse are easier to start with, because the lace weaves in and out of one large piece that stays put.
Lacing cards, weaving and a first sewing kit
Once the in-and-out movement is familiar, the lacing board set and the three safari animal cards ask for more planning: which hole comes next, and how to finish the outline. The animal weaving cards swap the lace for real wool. The peacock embroidery kit is for ages 8 and up, when a child is ready for a needle and a proper sewing project.
From lacing to tying shoes
The shoe lacing toy lets children practise crossing laces and making a bow on a shoe that does not move, at table height. It pairs well with the locomotive busy board, whose latches and catches train the same fingers for coats and bags.
Threading beads are among the simplest Montessori teaching toys to pack for a long journey or bring out in a waiting room. Before handing over the lace, tie a large knot or a first bead at its end, so the beads cannot slide off and the work is not lost.
