Guide & Pedagogy: Children's Wooden Workbenches

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

A child's work bench and tools gives a young builder a proper place to screw, bolt and tighten, at exactly their own height. Our wooden workbenches are for ages 3+ and arrive with the tools, nuts and bolts in the box, ready for the first project.

A child's wooden workbench made for real projects

At the bench, a three-year-old threads a bolt through a pre-drilled slat, turns the nut by hand, then finishes the job with the wooden spanner. The vice holds a piece steady, so both hands are free for the screwdriver. Once the model is built, it comes apart again for the next idea.

Working on their feet also asks for balance and steady arms: the child leans in, grips, twists and checks, a little like the grown-up they have watched in the garage.

Which kids workbench to choose?

  • Compact wooden tool workbench in grey and yellow: a small footprint that fits a bedroom corner or a nursery.
  • Deluxe compact workbench playset with tools: the same easy size, with a fuller kit to keep a keen builder busy.
  • 2-in-1 workbench and drawing desk: one piece of furniture for the child who builds in the morning and draws in the afternoon.

Setting up a childrens wooden workbench with tools

On the first day, put out only the hammer, a few bolts and one slat. Add the spanner, the screwdriver and the rest once the first tools are mastered, and show where each one hangs, so tidying up becomes part of the game. A wooden toy tool bench stays in use for years, as the best wooden Montessori toys do: the projects simply get more ambitious.

If your child already has a toolbox, the bench gives those tools a home. A younger child not yet ready for nuts and bolts will get on better with our hammering toys first.
