Guide & Pedagogy: Toolsets & Woodworking

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

A kids tool set lets a child copy the grown-up fixing a shelf, with tools sized for small hands and nothing sharp. Our wooden toolbox playsets are for ages 3+ and pack a hammer, screwdriver, spanner, nuts and bolts into a box with a handle.

What's inside a childrens tool set

Each box holds the classic toolkit in smooth wood: a hammer, a screwdriver, a spanner, a handful of screws, nuts and bolts, and drilled pieces to join together. The handle on the lid matters more than it looks: a three-year-old carries the box to the "broken" chair, opens it, picks the right tool and gets to work, just like a real carpenter. A real job done with tools that fit is exactly what good Montessori toys are built around.

Two toolboxes, one way of playing

  • Deluxe wooden toolbox set: a full carpentry kit in a sturdy wooden case, ideal as a first toolbox.
  • Deluxe wooden toolbox playset in grey and yellow: the same idea in the colours of a builder's kit, easy to spot on a shelf.

Both suit ages 3+, so the choice mostly comes down to taste. If your child is not yet three, our hammering toys give the same banging and fixing in a simpler form.

Getting the most from a child's toolbox

Start with one job at a time: two pieces of wood, one bolt, one nut. Hold the bolt while your child turns the nut, then swap roles. Screwing a nut on straight takes patience and a steady grip, and the satisfaction of a joint that holds is plain to see on their face.

Give the toolbox a fixed place in the room so your child can fetch it and put it back alone. A toy tool set with a home of its own gets used far more than one buried in a toy chest.
