Guide & Pedagogy: Montessori Materials

Development advice and benefits of the Montessori method

This range brings classic Montessori materials into your home, from a fabric grasping ball for a newborn to a fractions box for ages 6+. Each piece isolates one idea, such as size, colour or sound, so your child can spot their own mistakes, as the Montessori method intends.

Sensorial pieces: size, colour, sound and touch

The pink tower with its 10 visual cards and the cylinder blocks with 4 bases train the eye and hand to compare dimensions, while the geometric solids in their drawstring bag can be named by touch alone. Colour boxes 1 and 2 and the 63-shade colour tablets move from matching primary colours to grading shades, while the sound cylinders, the touch matching board and the tactile cushions sharpen hearing and touch.

Practical life and early maths at home

The dressing frame lets your child practise fastenings on the table before trying them on a coat, and the child-sized cleaning sets in blue or pink make wiping up a spill a job they can finish alone. For numbers, the abacuses, calculation rods, balance scale with brass weights, teaching clock and fractions box take over as they grow.

Starting with babies and toddlers

Before 18 months, the object permanence box with drawer and ball, the rainbow stackers and the shape inset and drop boxes are the usual first steps. A ball dropped through the hole disappears and comes back out of the drawer, and that small surprise holds attention for a long time. For free play beyond these exercises, see our wider range of wooden Montessori toys.

Our advice: put out two or three pieces at a time on a low shelf and rotate them every couple of weeks rather than offering everything at once.
